PROVIDING NEMT SERVICES
Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) covers all transportation services provided to patients not in an emergency situation or in need of an ambulance. NEMT is most often utilized by eligible Medicaid and Medicare members requesting a ride to their medical appointment or the pharmacy. From lack of driver’s license or working vehicle or geographic isolation, there are many potential reasons for patients to need NEMT.
More than 3.6 million people miss medical appointments due to transportation issues every year. In an effort to add benefits focused on preventing injuries or exacerbating existing health conditions, the CMS expanded their definition of the primary health-related benefits. Healthcare providers can now potentially design their Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans to include non-emergency medical transportation, healthy groceries, and exercise programs.
